Why Lightning Bug Media?

Joanna MacDonnell had an extensive 15-year career in the entertainment industry during which she took on a variety of production roles, including research and development, casting, producing, and acquiring user-generated content (UGC) and media assets for reality TV shows, game shows, true crime series, docuseries, and long-running clip shows.  

With a vision to turn her and her husband's television expertise and skills towards making a more positive impact, Joanna rooted for them to create their own commercial-based company with services in film production for small businesses. Together, they launched Lightning Bug Media in 2020.  

After taking a pause to raise their family, Joanna built a product and videography division from the ground up with the goal to further help small business owners and entrepreneurs with branding goals. She is especially passionate about working with other women and mom-owned businesses. Because who works harder than moms? Joanna also manages the research and production details for all clients of Lightning Bug.

John MacDonnell's entertainment industry credits comprise some of the longest-running and most-watched reality TV series, including Fast N' Loud. His career has specialized in developing unscripted television series, and for his insights and abilities to revitalize shows with clearer stories, impactful editing, and fresher looks.

Using a strong sense of narrative and visual storytelling, John helped reboot classic reality TV series Ghost Hunters and The Ultimate Fighter for digital streaming platforms and produced Misfits Garage. He is a commercially licensed drone pilot and currently produces and edits the docu-series My Porsche Story for Galpin Motors. In addition to his work in television, John co-created and runs commercial-based production company, Lightning Bug Media, with his wife. 

John is passionate about being creative, getting unique angles, and paying attention to the tiniest of details. He has been a lifelong car and off-roading enthusiast so he particularly loves to work with anything that can be driven. He strives to show the hard work and ingenuity behind the scenes of family-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.
